Intelligent Campground Scoring System
What is the Scoring System?
WhimTrav assigns every campground a quality score from 0 to 100 points based on a proprietary algorithm that evaluates multiple factors. This helps you quickly identify high-quality campgrounds with complete, accurate information.
Why Scoring Matters:
WhimTrav aggregates campgrounds from multiple data sources (OSM, Recreation.gov, state parks, local agencies, etc.). Some sources provide complete information with amenities, photos, and ratings - others provide only a name and coordinates. The scoring system helps you identify which campgrounds have reliable, detailed information.
How Campgrounds Are Scored
The scoring algorithm evaluates four categories with different point weights:
| Category |
Max Points |
What It Measures |
| Data Quality |
30 points |
Completeness of information: name, address, phone, website, description, photos, operating hours |
| Amenities |
40 points |
Available facilities: hookups, restrooms, showers, WiFi, pet-friendly, dump station, etc. (up to 10 amenities counted) |
| Rating |
15 points |
Rating when the campground’s source provides one (scaled from 0-5 stars to 0-15 points); 0 when none |
| Distance |
15 points |
Proximity to your current location (closer campgrounds score higher) |
Data Quality Points (30 max):
- +5 points: Has name
- +5 points: Has formatted address
- +5 points: Has phone number
- +5 points: Has website URL
- +5 points: Has description or editorial summary
- +3 points: Has photos
- +2 points: Has operating hours
Amenities Points (40 max):
- +4 points per amenity, up to 10 amenities (40 points total)
- Counted amenities: electric hookups, water hookups, sewer hookups, restrooms, showers, WiFi, pet-friendly, dump station, laundry, fire pits, picnic tables, etc.
Rating Points (15 max):
- Based on a rating from the campground’s source, when it has one (0-5 stars)
- Formula: (rating / 5.0) × 15
- Example: 4.5 star rating = (4.5 / 5.0) × 15 = 13.5 points
Distance Points (15 max):
- Closer campgrounds score higher
- 15 points at 0 miles, decreasing linearly to 0 points at 50+ miles
- Example: Campground 10 miles away = 15 × (1 - 10/50) = 12 points
Understanding Score Ranges
| Score Range |
Quality Level |
What It Means |
| 80-100 |
Excellent |
Complete information, many amenities, high ratings - best choice |
| 60-79 |
Good |
Solid information, decent amenities, good ratings - reliable option |
| 40-59 |
Fair |
Some information missing, limited amenities - acceptable but not ideal |
| 0-39 |
Poor (Triggers Enrichment) |
Minimal information, few/no amenities - automatically enriched from public agency data and place search |
Smart Enrichment Threshold:
Any campground scoring below 40/100 automatically triggers smart data enrichment. WhimTrav will look for missing information like phone numbers and websites. See the next section for details.
Where You See Scores
Campground scores appear in multiple places:
- Search Results Panel - Score badge next to each campground name
- Map Markers - Tap a campground marker to see its score in the info window
- Trip Suggestions Panel - AI trip planning shows scores for recommended campgrounds
- Detailed Campground View - Full breakdown of how the score was calculated
Smart Data Enrichment
What is Smart Enrichment?
Campground records come from many public sources, and some have little more than a name and a location. When a campground scores below 40/100, WhimTrav tries to fill the gaps automatically so you can still call ahead or check the campground's own website.
Why some records are thin:
- OpenStreetMap (OSM) - Community-maintained, often only a name and coordinates
- Recreation.gov - Federal campgrounds, usually with good detail
- State and local agencies - Detail varies by agency
How Smart Enrichment Works
- Campground is scored - Each search result gets a 0-100 data-quality score
- Low score detected - Below 40/100, enrichment starts
- Public agency data first - WhimTrav checks Recreation.gov and National Park Service data for the same campground; what it finds there is saved with the campground
- Place search for contact details - If the phone number or website is still missing, WhimTrav looks the campground up by name and location with HERE place search. These contact details are shown to you but are not stored
- Score recalculated - The campground is re-scored with the added information
What Enrichment Can Add
- Phone number - Campground or park office
- Website - The campground's own site for reservations and details
- Agency details - Description, amenities and reservation information when Recreation.gov or the National Park Service has them
Enrichment never adds star ratings or reviews. Always confirm details with the campground before you go: hours, fees and access change.
Example: OSM campground before and after enrichment
Before: "Pine Grove Campground" (OpenStreetMap) - name and location only - score 17/100
After: phone and website found by place search - score 27/100
AI-Powered Trip Planning
What is AI Trip Planning?
WhimTrav's AI Trip Planning feature uses Google's Gemini AI to plan comprehensive multi-day road trips. Simply tell the voice assistant your destination, and the AI analyzes your route, RV profile, and preferences to suggest personalized overnight stops, campgrounds, fuel stops, and scenic alternatives.
How It's Different from Simple Navigation:
Traditional navigation (Google Maps, Apple Maps) just shows the fastest route from A to B. WhimTrav's AI Trip Planning considers:
- Your RV specifications (length, height, weight, fuel type)
- Your driving pace (average miles per day, maximum hours per day)
- Your camping style preferences (boondocking, partial hookups, full hookups)
- Your activity interests (hiking, fishing, museums, national parks)
- Scenic route options vs. fastest routes
- Fuel stop optimization based on your fuel type and range
How to Use AI Trip Planning
Step 1: Activate Voice Assistant
- Tap the large circular voice button at the bottom of the map screen
- Wait for the button to turn red (listening state)
Step 2: Ask for Trip Planning
Say phrases like:
- "Plan a trip from Seattle to Miami"
- "I want to drive from Los Angeles to New York"
- "Plan a road trip from Denver to Boston"
- "Help me plan a trip to Yellowstone National Park"
Step 3: AI Processes Your Request
- Gemini AI identifies your origin and destination
- Calculates total distance and estimated driving time
- Analyzes your RV profile and preferences from onboarding
- Determines how many overnight stops you'll need based on your average miles per day
Step 4: View Trip Suggestions Panel
A detailed trip suggestions panel appears showing:
- Trip Overview: Total distance, estimated days, route type (fastest vs. scenic)
- Day-by-Day Breakdown: Each day's driving segment with mileage and estimated time
- Overnight Stops: Recommended campgrounds with scores, amenities, and locations
- Fuel Stops: Gas stations along the route based on your fuel type
- Scenic Alternatives: Optional scenic routes if you prefer slower, more beautiful drives
Step 5: Navigate to Waypoints
- Tap any waypoint in the trip suggestions panel to navigate directly to that location
- Start with Day 1's overnight stop, navigate there, camp, then continue to Day 2, etc.
- Tap fuel stops to navigate to gas stations when needed

- Coastal views, national parks, slower but more beautiful
- Highlights: Redwood National Park, Big Sur, San Diego, Gulf Coast
Fuel Stop Planning
AI plans fuel stops based on:
- Your Fuel Type: Recommends diesel stations if you have a diesel RV, gas stations if gasoline
- Typical RV Range: Assumes ~400-500 mile range for Class A/C motorhomes, ~300-400 miles for gas
- Route Segment: Plans fuel stops at logical intervals (every 300-400 miles)
- RV-Friendly Stations: Prioritizes truck stops and travel centers with RV lanes (Pilot Flying J, Love's, TA/Petro)
Trip Planning Tips
- Complete Your Profile First: The more information you provide in onboarding, the better AI trip planning works
- Be Specific with Destinations: "Plan a trip to Yellowstone" is better than "Plan a trip west"
- Use Continuous Voice Mode: Long-press the voice button and have a conversation - ask follow-up questions like "Can you suggest a faster route?" or "Show me more boondocking options"
- Update Your Preferences: If your camping style changes (e.g., winter RVing in warmer climates requires full hookups), update your profile in Settings
- Save Favorite Campgrounds: Validate campgrounds you love - they'll appear with green shields for future trips
Voice Assistant (Voice AI)
What is the Voice Assistant?
WhimTrav's voice assistant is powered by Google's Gemini AI, a large language model that understands natural conversation. Unlike simple voice commands that require specific phrases, Gemini AI understands context, intent, and conversational language.
Activating the Voice Assistant
Single Tap (One-time listening):
- Tap the large circular gradient button at the bottom-center of the map
- Button turns red and shows microphone icon
- Say your command naturally (e.g., "Find campgrounds near Yellowstone")

Navigation & RV-Aware Routing
How WhimTrav's Navigation Accounts for Your RV
Unlike standard car navigation (Google Maps, Apple Maps), WhimTrav plans your route with professional truck-routing data from HERE, using the height, width, length, and weight you enter for your RV. Roads with low bridges, tunnels, or weight, length, or width limits your RV can't handle are avoided before you start driving.
Why Standard Navigation is Dangerous for RVs:
Google Maps and Apple Maps are designed for cars, not RVs. They will happily route you:
- Under 10-foot bridges when your RV is 13 feet tall
- Across weight-restricted bridges that can't handle your 15,000 lb motorhome
- Onto parkways and narrow roads that don't allow large vehicles
WhimTrav checks your route BEFORE you start driving.
Enter Your RV's Measurements
RV-aware routing needs four measurements, entered by you in Settings (or when you first sign up). WhimTrav never fills these in for you:
- Height — to the highest point, usually the top of the roof AC
- Width — body width, not counting mirrors
- Length — bumper to bumper (towing: include the tow vehicle)
- Weight — loaded weight (towing: combined weight)
How Restriction Checking Works
- You start navigation — from search results, a voice command ("Navigate to Glacier National Park"), or Start Navigation on a planned trip.
- HERE plans an RV route — through every stop of your trip, using your height, width, length, and weight, so roads your RV can't use are avoided.
- If a restriction can't be avoided — before you drive, a warning lists each one (for example "Length limit 33 ft (certain hours/days)"). You can Find Alternate, Proceed Anyway, or Cancel. If you proceed, the spots are circled on the map and a Restriction Ahead alert appears about 20 miles before each one.
When RV-Aware Routing Isn't Possible
Before the drive starts, WhimTrav tells you and lets you choose:
- Your RV measurements aren't set: add them in Settings, or continue with standard car routing that does not check restrictions.
- RV-aware routing is temporarily unavailable: try again, or continue with a backup route that avoids roads too low or heavy for your RV where that's known — it is not double-checked for restrictions.
Whenever you're on a route that isn't RV-checked, an orange label stays on screen for the whole drive. Your choice is recorded with your account.
Starting Navigation
Method 1: From Search Results
- Press one of the colored search buttons (gas, food, campground, dump station, state park)
- Tap the navigation arrow next to any result
- The route is checked for your RV and navigation begins
Method 2: From Voice Command
- Tap or long-press the voice button
- Say "Navigate to [address/place]"
- The route is checked for your RV and drawn on the map
Method 3: From a Planned Trip
- Plan a trip with the voice assistant (e.g., "Plan a trip to Miami") or open a saved trip
- Tap Start Navigation in the trip panel
- The whole remaining trip is routed for your RV through every stop
While You Drive
- Turn-by-turn directions appear at the top of the screen with the distance to the next turn and your ETA
- On a trip, each stop is announced on screen as "Arrive at [stop]"
Automatic Rerouting
If you leave the planned route, WhimTrav recalculates from your current position — on a trip, through the stops still ahead — with the same RV-aware routing. It never interrupts you with a question while you're driving.
RV-Aware Navigation Tips
- Enter all four measurements: restriction checking only works with your RV's real height, width, length, and weight
- Update before big trips: if you change RVs or add roof accessories (solar panels, AC units), update your height
- Trust the warnings: if WhimTrav warns about a restriction, look for an alternate route
- Use "Proceed Anyway" carefully: only if you're certain the restriction doesn't apply to you
- Watch the signs: posted clearances change (repaving, snow); always follow road signs over any app
Advanced Place Search Features
Dual-API Search System
WhimTrav uses a sophisticated dual-API search system that combines Mapbox Search Box API (primary) with HERE place search (fallback) to provide comprehensive place discovery.
Why Dual-API Search?
No single search API is perfect for all use cases:
- Mapbox Search Box: Excellent for generic POI searches like "restaurants" or "gas stations" with broad geographic coverage
- HERE place search: Good at finding specific business names and addresses
By using both, WhimTrav ensures you always get results for your search query.
How the Search System Works
Primary Search: Mapbox Search Box API
- You search for a place (via voice or button press)
- WhimTrav sends query to Mapbox Search Box API
- Mapbox returns POIs within ~30 miles of your current location
- Results include name, address, coordinates, and place type
- If results found, display in results panel and map markers
Fallback Search: HERE Place Search
- If Mapbox returns 0 results, automatic fallback triggers
- WhimTrav sends the same query to HERE place search
- HERE returns matching places with name, address and location
- Results displayed seamlessly - you won't notice the switch
Understanding Place Categories
1. Gas Stations (Red Button)
- Gas and diesel fuel stations
- Truck stops, some with RV lanes
- Searchable within 30 miles of current location
- Shows location name, address, and distance
2. Restaurants (Orange Button)
- Dining options: fast food, casual, full service, fine dining
- Cafes, diners, food trucks
- Searchable within 30 miles
3. Dump Stations (Purple Button)
- RV dump stations (tankage disposal)
- RV dealer facilities with dump services
- Campgrounds offering dump access to non-guests
- Rest areas and travel centers with RV dump facilities
- Uses multiple search terms: "RV dump station", "dump station", "RV service"
4. Campgrounds (Green Button)
- Searches WhimTrav's 50,000+ campground database (not live API search)
- Displays intelligent quality scores (0-100 points)
- Triggers smart enrichment for campgrounds scoring below 40/100
- Shows campground types:
- "$" symbol (green) = Paid commercial campgrounds (RV resorts, private campgrounds)
- "★" symbol (blue) = Donation-based or public campgrounds (BLM, National Forest, State Parks, USACE, NPS)
- No symbol = Free or dispersed camping areas (primitive camping, boondocking)
Community Validation Shields
Every search result shows a shield icon for community validation:
| Shield Color |
Meaning |
Action |
| Gray Shield |
Not yet verified (< 3 validations) |
Tap to validate if you've been there |
| Blue Shield |
You have validated this location |
Cannot validate again (prevents duplicate votes) |
| Green Shield |
Community verified (≥ 3 validations) |
Trusted by multiple RVers |
How to Validate Locations:

Weather & Wind Information
Why Wind Information Matters for RVs
Wind is one of the most critical safety factors for RV drivers:
- Large Surface Area: RVs and trailers act like sails in crosswinds
- High Center of Gravity: Tall Class A motorhomes are more susceptible to tipping in strong gusts
- Trailer Sway: Fifth wheels and travel trailers can develop dangerous sway in crosswinds over 25 mph
- Bridge Crossings: Wind can be significantly stronger on bridges and overpasses
When to Avoid Driving:
General RV Safety Guidelines:
- 10-20 mph winds: Safe for most RVs, monitor conditions
- 20-30 mph winds: Use caution, reduce speed, be alert for gusts
- 30-40 mph winds: Dangerous for tall RVs and trailers - consider delaying travel
- 40+ mph winds: AVOID driving - risk of rollover or loss of control
Wind Data Display
Wind Display Button (Top-Left Corner):
The wind button shows real-time wind data:
- Wind Speed: Displayed in mph (e.g., "12.5 mph")
- Wind Icon: Air/wind symbol
- Background Color:
- White = Wind visualization OFF
- Blue = Wind visualization ON (animated overlay)
Animated Wind Visualization:
- Tap the wind button to toggle animation on/off
- When ON, map displays animated wind flow lines showing wind direction
- Flow lines move in the direction of wind travel
- Density of lines indicates wind speed intensity
Wind Button Positioning
Wind button automatically repositions based on app state:
- When NOT navigating: Top-left corner (doesn't block any UI)
- During navigation: Moves to bottom-left corner to avoid blocking navigation info panel
- This ensures you can monitor wind conditions while navigating without blocking turn-by-turn instructions
Wind Data Technical Details
- Data Source: OpenWeatherMap API
- Update Frequency: Every 5 minutes
- Accuracy: Based on nearest weather station (typically within 10-20 miles)
- Wind Direction: Degrees from north (0° = north, 90° = east, 180° = south, 270° = west)

Tips & Best Practices
Voice Assistant Tips
- Use Continuous Mode for Trips: Long-press the voice button for hands-free conversation while planning or driving
- Be Specific with Trip Planning: "Plan a 7-day trip to Yellowstone" is better than "Show me Yellowstone"
- Ask Follow-Up Questions: In continuous mode, ask "Can you find boondocking options?" or "Show me fuel stops"
- Complete Your Profile First: AI trip planning works best when you've provided RV specs and preferences
Campground Search Tips
- Trust the Scores: Campgrounds scoring 80+ have complete information and many amenities - they're your best choice
- Validate Locations You Visit: Help the community by tapping shields on campgrounds you've stayed at
- Check Enriched Data: Low-scoring campgrounds that get enriched often reveal hidden gems with great amenities
- Use Filters: Search for specific amenities like "pet-friendly campgrounds" or "full hookups"
Navigation Safety Tips
- ALWAYS Enter RV Height & Weight: Restriction warnings are critical for RV safety - don't skip this step
- Never Ignore Restriction Warnings: If WhimTrav warns about a low bridge or other limit, find an alternate route
- Pre-Check Long Routes: Use AI trip planning for long-distance trips to get routes checked for your RV’s size before you start
- Update Height if You Add Roof Items: Solar panels, roof AC units, or bike racks increase your total height
Wind Safety Tips
- Check Wind Before Leaving: Tap wind button to see current conditions before starting your drive
- Monitor During Navigation: Wind button stays visible during navigation (bottom-left corner)
- Delay Travel in High Winds: If winds exceed 30 mph, consider waiting a few hours or delaying departure
- Reduce Speed in Crosswinds: Even moderate crosswinds (20-25 mph) require slower speeds for safe RV handling
Troubleshooting
General Issues
App Won't Start
Problem: App crashes on launch or shows blank screen
Solution:
- Force close the app completely (swipe away from recent apps)
- Clear app cache: Settings > Apps > WhimTrav > Storage > Clear Cache
- Restart the app
- If persistent, restart your device
- Check for app updates in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)
Location Not Found
Problem: "Location is null" error or GPS position doesn't update
Solution:
- Verify location services are enabled: Settings > Location > ON
- Ensure "High Accuracy" mode is selected (uses GPS + WiFi + cellular)
- Grant WhimTrav location permission: Settings > Apps > WhimTrav > Permissions > Location > Allow
- Wait 10-30 seconds for GPS lock (especially in new locations)
- Move to open area if indoors or under heavy tree cover
Voice Assistant Issues
Voice Button Not Responding
Problem: Tapping voice button does nothing or microphone doesn't activate
Solution:
- Check microphone permission: Settings > Apps > WhimTrav > Permissions > Microphone > Allow
- Verify internet connection (Gemini AI requires network access)
- Close and reopen the app
- Test microphone in another app (voice recorder) to confirm hardware works
- Restart device if microphone is obstructed or malfunctioning
AI Doesn't Understand Commands
Problem: Voice assistant misinterprets or ignores spoken commands
Solution:
- Speak clearly and reduce background noise (wind, music, engine noise)
- Use specific phrases: "Navigate to Yellowstone National Park" instead of "Go to Yellowstone"
- Check internet connection - poor network slows AI processing
- Try continuous mode (long-press) for better context understanding
Navigation Issues
Restriction Warnings Not Showing
Problem: No height/weight warnings appear even though you have a tall RV
Solution:
- Verify you've entered RV height and weight in your profile: Settings > Profile > RV Specifications
- Height must be in feet (e.g., 13.5), weight in pounds (e.g., 15000)
- If profile is complete, check internet connection (restriction checking requires API access)
- Restriction data may not exist for all routes - rural roads may have limited coverage
Navigation Won't Start
Problem: Can't start turn-by-turn navigation to a location
Solution:
- Ensure GPS location is locked (wait for blue dot to appear on map)
- Verify search result appeared in results panel
- Check internet connection (Google Directions API requires network)
- If restriction warning appeared, tap "Continue Anyway" or "Cancel Route" to proceed
- Force close and restart app if repeatedly fails
Campground Search Issues
Low Campground Scores
Problem: All campgrounds show scores below 40/100
Solution:
- This is normal for some data sources (especially OSM) - wait for smart enrichment to trigger
- Enrichment happens automatically in the background - scores will increase once missing details are found
- Check internet connection - enrichment requires API access
- After enrichment, scores typically increase to 60-80+
No Search Results Found
Problem: Campground search returns 0 results
Solution:
- Zoom out on map - you may be in an area with sparse campground coverage
- Check your internet connection (the fallback search needs it)
- Try voice search: "Find campgrounds near [city name]"
- Search for nearby towns - rural areas may have campgrounds listed under town names
Wind Information Issues
Wind Button Not Appearing
Problem: Wind button doesn't show on map screen
Solution:
- Check internet connection - wind data requires OpenWeatherMap API access
- Wait 30 seconds after app launch - wind data loads after location lock
- Verify location services are enabled (wind data requires GPS coordinates)
- Force close and restart app
